Augustine Writes the Confessions

c. AD 397-400 Traditional dating

Bishop Augustine of Hippo composed the Confessions, an extended autobiographical prayer recounting his conversion from a life of ambition and Manichaean belief to Christian faith, widely regarded as the first true autobiography in Western literature.

The event

Some years after becoming Bishop of Hippo in North Africa, Augustine composed the Confessions, a thirteen-book work addressed directly to God recounting his own spiritual journey — from a restless youth marked by ambition, a long-term relationship outside marriage, and years of adherence to Manichaeism, through his eventual conversion to Christianity in Milan under the influence of Bishop Ambrose.

The work is notable for its psychological depth and candor, exploring Augustine's inner motivations and struggles (including his famous prayer, recalled from his youth, "Grant me chastity and continence, but not yet") with an introspective honesty that had few precedents in ancient literature. Its narrative climaxes in a garden in Milan, where Augustine describes hearing a child's voice repeating "take up and read," prompting him to open Paul's letter to the Romans to a passage that crystallized his decision to convert.

Beyond straightforward autobiography, the Confessions is also a sustained theological meditation on memory, time, and the nature of God, particularly in its later books, which move from personal narrative into extended philosophical reflection on the opening chapters of Genesis.

The Confessions has remained continuously influential across the history of Western literature and theology, frequently cited as the first true autobiography in the Western tradition and a foundational text for later Christian traditions of introspective spiritual writing, from medieval mystics to Reformation-era conversion narratives.
