Joash's Rescue, Reign, and Temple Repair

841–796 BC Traditional dating

Hidden as an infant from his murderous grandmother Athaliah, Joash was crowned at age seven by the priest Jehoiada and grew up to repair the Lord's Temple — until Jehoiada's death left him dangerously exposed to bad counsel.

The event

When Athaliah, daughter of Ahab and mother of the slain King Ahaziah, seized Judah's throne, she tried to wipe out the entire royal line. Ahaziah's sister Jehosheba secretly rescued the infant Joash and hid him in the Temple for six years, under the protection of the priest Jehoiada. At seven years old, Joash was brought out, crowned, and the tyrant Athaliah was deposed and put to death.

Guided by Jehoiada throughout his minority, Joash grew into a king devoted to restoring true worship. His signature achievement was repairing the Temple of the Lord, which had fallen into serious disrepair — he had a chest set up at the Temple gate to collect funds from the people, and the money was used to pay carpenters, masons, and stoneworkers until the house of the Lord was fully restored.

Tragically, once Jehoiada died, Joash listened to other officials and allowed Judah to slide back into idolatry — even having Jehoiada's own son Zechariah stoned to death in the Temple courtyard for confronting the apostasy. Joash's story is a hard lesson about how much a single godly mentor can hold together, and how quickly things can unravel once that influence is gone.

Dating

Joash was rescued by Jehosheba in 841 BC when Athaliah seized the throne (the year of Jehu's coup, fixed by Assyrian synchronisms), hidden in the temple six years, and crowned in 835 BC when Jehoiada deposed Athaliah (2 Kings 11). His reign proper runs 835–796 BC in Thiele's chronology; the temple repair belongs to its middle years (2 Kings 12:6 mentions his 23rd year, c. 812 BC).
