Daniel Interprets Nebuchadnezzar's Dreams

c. 603-570 BC Traditional dating

Called from among the wise men of Babylon, Daniel repeatedly succeeds where the empire's astrologers fail, interpreting a dream of coming kingdoms and, later, warning proud Nebuchadnezzar of the humbling that awaits him.

The event

Early in his career at the Babylonian court, Daniel was thrust into a crisis: Nebuchadnezzar demanded that his wise men not only interpret a troubling dream but first tell him what he had dreamed, on pain of death for the entire guild of advisers. When God revealed both the dream and its meaning to Daniel in a night vision, Daniel gave all credit to "the God of heaven" before ever entering the king's presence. The dream's towering statue of four metals, shattered by a stone "cut without hands," outlined a succession of world empires that would ultimately give way to God's own indestructible kingdom — a prophecy Nebuchadnezzar received with astonished worship, even while remaining, for the moment, unconverted.

Years later — probably well into Nebuchadnezzar's reign — Daniel was called on again, this time to interpret a dream of a great tree cut down, foretelling that the king himself would be humbled. Nebuchadnezzar's warning went unheeded for twelve months, until, at the height of his pride, he was struck with a period of madness, living like a beast of the field until he acknowledged "that the Most High rules the kingdom of men." His restoration and closing doxology stand as one of the Old Testament's most striking testimonies of a pagan king brought to genuine, if imperfect, recognition of the true God.

Neither episode gives an exact calendar date, and that is by design — Daniel is far more interested in showing that the God of the exiles governs every empire and every mind, including the mightiest monarch of the age, than in providing a chronicle for its own sake.

Dating

The statue dream carries a regnal-year marker (Nebuchadnezzar's second year), but the tree/madness episode of Daniel 4 is undated in the text; most evangelical scholars place it later in his 43-year reign, since Nebuchadnezzar's boast about his building projects presupposes they were already complete.
