The Death of Aaron on Mount Hor
1407 BC Traditional dating
Near the end of the wilderness years, Aaron, Israel's first high priest, dies on Mount Hor after his priestly garments are transferred to his son Eleazar.
The event
Aaron's death is recorded with a tenderness that matches his long, complicated service alongside his brother Moses. As Israel neared the end of the forty years, God told Moses that Aaron would not enter Canaan, on account of the same episode at Meribah where both brothers had failed to honor God properly before the people (Numbers 20:12, 24). Rather than a sudden judgment, the moment is handled as a solemn transfer of office: Moses led Aaron and his son Eleazar up Mount Hor in full view of the assembly, removed Aaron's priestly garments, and put them on Eleazar.
Aaron died there on the mountain at 123 years old, and Israel mourned him for thirty days — the same length of mourning later given to Moses himself, a mark of how central Aaron's role as high priest had become to the life of the nation. From his consecration at Sinai onward, Aaron had stood at the center of Israel's worship, offering the sacrifices that maintained the relationship between a holy God and a sinful people, even though his own record included the golden calf and moments of open conflict with Moses.
The peaceful transfer of the priesthood to Eleazar, rather than its collapse with Aaron's death, mattered enormously for Israel going forward: it established that the office, not merely the man, carried God's authority, and it kept the sacrificial system running without interruption right up to the eve of the conquest of Canaan.
Dating
Numbers 33:38 dates Aaron's death with unusual precision: the first day of the fifth month of the fortieth year after the Exodus, when Aaron was 123 years old. On the traditional early-date chronology that computes to 1407 BC; a late-date scheme shifts it by roughly two centuries while preserving the same fortieth-year interval.
