Jesus Walks on Water

c. AD 29 Traditional dating

In the dark hours before dawn, Jesus comes to his storm-tossed disciples walking on the Sea of Galilee, and calls Peter to step out of the boat toward him in faith.

The event

After feeding the five thousand, Jesus sends his disciples ahead by boat across the Sea of Galilee while he goes up the mountain alone to pray. Hours later, in the fourth watch of the night, the disciples are straining against a headwind in the middle of the lake when they see a figure walking toward them on the water and cry out in terror, thinking it a ghost. Jesus immediately calls out, "Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid."

Peter, impulsive as ever, asks to come to Jesus on the water and, remarkably, begins walking — until he notices the wind and begins to sink, crying, "Lord, save me." Jesus immediately reaches out and catches him, gently rebuking his "little faith" and doubt. As the two climb into the boat, the wind ceases, and the disciples worship him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God" — a confession that builds directly on the wonder already stirred by the earlier storm.
