Israel Demands a King
c. 1050 BC Traditional dating
Israel's elders ask Samuel for a king 'like all the nations,' a request granted even as Samuel warns them of its cost and reminds them the LORD remains their true King.
The event
By the time Samuel was old, Israel's elders came to him at Ramah with a request that would reshape the nation: 'Appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.' Samuel's sons, whom he had appointed as judges, had turned aside for dishonest gain, and the tribes wanted the kind of stable, visible leadership their neighbors had. Samuel took the request personally, but the LORD told him plainly that it was not Samuel they had rejected — it was God Himself as their king.
Samuel obeyed and warned the people exactly what a human king would cost them: their sons for his armies, their daughters for his household, their fields and flocks and a tenth of their harvest for his court. The people insisted anyway. It's a strikingly candid episode — Israel's request wasn't wrong in the sense that kingship itself was foreign to God's plan (Deuteronomy 17:14-20 had already anticipated a king, and Genesis 49:10 had pointed toward one from Judah's line). The failure was in the motive: wanting to be 'like all the nations' rather than trusting the LORD who had delivered them.
This scene sets the terms for everything that follows in the books of Samuel and Kings. Israel will get its king — in fact, three remarkable ones in a row — but the story never lets the reader forget that the true King of Israel is the LORD, and that human kings will be judged by how faithfully they submit to Him.
