Egypt's Old Kingdom and the Age of Pyramids
c. 2686-2181 BC Traditional dating
Under the Third through Sixth Dynasties, Egypt became a unified, highly organized kingdom ruled by god-kings called pharaohs, whose most famous monuments — the pyramids of Giza — still stand as the ancient world's greatest engineering achievement.
The event
While Sumerian cities flourished in Mesopotamia, a very different kind of civilization was consolidating along the Nile. Egypt's Old Kingdom, spanning the Third through Sixth Dynasties, produced the world's first centralized nation-state: one king, treated as a living god, ruling a single unified land from the Nile Delta to the First Cataract, supported by an enormous bureaucracy of scribes, priests, and officials.
This is the Egypt that would later loom so large in the biblical story — not yet the Egypt of Joseph or Moses, but the same land, the same river, and the same pattern of pharaonic rule that Genesis and Exodus describe with striking accuracy. The Old Kingdom's engineering triumphs, especially the pyramids raised as eternal tombs for pharaohs like Djoser and Khufu, testify to a nation with the wealth, organization, and manpower that would one day be able to enslave, and later be forced to free, a large body of Hebrew laborers.
Old Kingdom Egypt eventually weakened and fractured into the disunity of the First Intermediate Period, a sober reminder that even the mightiest kingdoms rise and fall under God's sovereign hand over history (Daniel 2:21). Egypt would reunify and rise again in the Middle Kingdom — the era into which, by the traditional evangelical chronology, Joseph would one day be sold as a slave.
Dating
Old Kingdom dates are reconstructed from ancient king lists (the Turin Canon, the Palermo Stone, and Manetho's much later dynastic history) combined with contemporary monuments, astronomical data, and radiocarbon studies. Individual years can shift by a decade or two — radiocarbon results tend to run slightly earlier than the conventional dates — though the overall dynastic sequence (Dynasties 3-6) is well established. The dates here follow the widely used Oxford chronology.
