Composition of the Rigveda

c. 1500–1200 BC Disputed dating

Hindu tradition's oldest and most revered scripture, over a thousand hymns to the Vedic gods, takes shape as oral poetry among the early Indo-Aryan clans of India.

The event

The Rigveda, a collection of 1,028 hymns addressed chiefly to Indra, Agni, Soma, and Varuna, took shape over these centuries among the early Vedic clans of northwest India. Composed in an early, highly structured form of Sanskrit, it was preserved for hundreds of years by professional reciters trained to reproduce its exact sound, meter, and word order from memory alone, long before it was ever committed to writing.

As the first and most foundational of the four Vedas, it underlies nearly everything that follows in later Hindu ritual, philosophy, and social structure — one of its later hymns, the 'Purusha Sukta,' even describes the four traditional castes as emerging from the body of a primordial cosmic being. Its faithful oral transmission across so many centuries is itself an impressive testimony to what a determined culture could preserve without writing.

It is worth noting, by way of contrast, what makes the transmission of Scripture different in kind. The Rigveda shows that ancient peoples were capable of transmitting a long text with real fidelity; the Old Testament's transmission — copied for well over a millennium by scribes bound to exacting rules, and confirmed in its accuracy by discoveries like the Dead Sea Scrolls — rests on that same human diligence, but undergirded by God's own promise to preserve His word: 'The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever' (Isaiah 40:8; see also Matthew 24:35).

Dating

This range is the mainstream scholarly estimate, based on linguistic analysis and internal references to geography and society. Traditional Hindu chronology places the Rigveda far earlier, sometimes many thousands of years earlier, within a cyclical view of time quite different from the Bible's linear, historical framework. The hymns were composed and transmitted orally for centuries before ever being written down.
