Ancestor in the genealogy of Jesus, son of Eliud

Eleazar

el-ee-AY-zar

A postexilic ancestor of Jesus named only in Matthew's genealogy; a different, otherwise-unattested person from Aaron's son Eleazar, who succeeded him as high priest of Israel.

Life and work

This Eleazar appears exactly once in Scripture, named as the son of Eliud and father of Matthan in Matthew's genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:15). No episode or detail about his life is recorded, and he should not be confused with the far more prominent Eleazar, son of Aaron, who succeeded his father as high priest and oversaw the division of the land of Canaan (Numbers 20:28; Joshua 14:1) — that Eleazar lived many centuries earlier and is unrelated to this genealogical figure in Joseph's ancestry.

Extra-biblical evidence

No extra-biblical source or narrative episode exists for this Eleazar; he is attested only in Matthew's genealogy.
