Martha of Bethany

MAR-thuh · Also called Martha

A practical, hospitable woman from Bethany, often remembered for being 'distracted with much serving,' who also delivered one of the boldest confessions of faith in the Gospels at her brother's tomb.

Life and work

Martha lived in Bethany, a village near Jerusalem, with her siblings Mary and Lazarus. Luke records that she welcomed Jesus into her home, then became 'distracted with much serving' while her sister Mary sat at Jesus's feet listening to him teach. When Martha complained that Mary had left her to do the work alone, Jesus gently replied that Mary had 'chosen the good portion,' while Martha was 'anxious and troubled about many things' (Luke 10:38-42) — an episode that has shaped how Martha is remembered ever since, sometimes unfairly reduced to a symbol of distraction rather than devotion.

The fuller picture of Martha comes from John's Gospel. When Lazarus fell ill and died, Martha went out to meet Jesus before he even reached the house, telling him plainly, 'Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.' In the conversation that follows, Martha makes a confession as direct and theologically weighty as Peter's: 'I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world' (John 11:27).

Martha appears once more at a dinner in Bethany shortly before Jesus's death, again serving the meal (John 12:1-2) — consistent, practical hospitality to the end. Between her complaint in Luke and her confession in John, the Gospels present a woman who was both a devoted worker and a person of deep, considered faith.

Reflect

Martha was busy serving while Mary sat listening, and Jesus gently named her worry — what busyness is crowding out your attention?
