Prophetess; elder sister of Moses and Aaron
Miriam
MEER-ee-um
The elder sister of Moses and Aaron, identified in Exodus as a prophetess who led Israel's women in worship after the Red Sea crossing, and whose later challenge to Moses's authority resulted in her being struck with leprosy — a sobering episode in an otherwise celebrated life.
Life and work
Miriam appears first, unnamed, as the resourceful sister who watched over her infant brother Moses's basket in the Nile reeds and cleverly arranged for their own mother to be hired as his nurse by Pharaoh's daughter, ensuring the baby's survival and his connection to his birth family (Exodus 2:4-8).
She is formally named and titled 'the prophetess' at Israel's moment of triumph after crossing the Red Sea, where she led the women of Israel in celebratory song and dance with tambourines, echoing and responding to the victory song of Moses: 'Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously' (Exodus 15:20-21).
Miriam's standing was not without conflict: alongside Aaron, she criticized Moses over his marriage to a Cushite woman and challenged whether the Lord had spoken only through Moses and not also through them. God rebuked both siblings, but struck Miriam alone with leprosy; at Moses's intercessory prayer she was healed after seven days shut outside the camp (Numbers 12:1-15). She died and was buried at Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin, during the fortieth year of Israel's wanderings (Numbers 20:1).
