Beersheba is a city of the biblical world.
What is known
- Beersheba marks the traditional southern boundary of Israelite settlement in the recurring phrase 'from Dan to Beersheba' (e.g., Judges 20:1), spanning the full north-south extent of the land
- Abraham dug a well and made a covenant with Abimelech at Beersheba, and the name is explained as deriving from that oath ('well of the oath' or 'well of seven,' Genesis 21:22-31)
- Isaac and Jacob both had significant encounters with God at Beersheba (Genesis 26:23-25; Genesis 46:1-5)
- Tel Be'er Sheva, excavated extensively since the 1960s, revealed a well-planned Iron Age administrative city with a distinctive four-horned altar and an elaborate water system, and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Archaeology
Excavations at Tel Be'er Sheva (led by Yohanan Aharoni beginning in the 1960s) uncovered a well-preserved Iron Age fortified city with a distinctive circular street plan, a large four-horned sacrificial altar (dismantled and reused in a storehouse wall, reflecting later centralization of worship in Jerusalem), and a deep water system cut into bedrock. The site is inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage 'Biblical Tels' listing.
