Waypoints on the Appian Way
Forum of Appius & Three Taverns
FOR-um of AP-ee-us · Modern Near Borgo Faiti / Cisterna di Latina, Lazio, Italy · 41.5290° N, 12.9120° E
These were two Roman waystations on the Via Appia south of Rome — Forum Appii roughly 43 Roman miles from Rome, Three Taverns about 10 miles closer. Acts 28:15 records that when believers in Rome heard Paul was approaching, they traveled out to meet him at these two points; seeing them, Paul "thanked God and took courage."
Archaeology
There are no specific, pinpointed excavated ruins definitively marking either site today — this is a general regional identification only. Forum Appii is placed near modern Borgo Faiti in the reclaimed Pontine Marshes, with only scattered traces surviving. Three Taverns' exact location is even less certain. Both sites are attested by classical writers (Cicero, Horace) as established stopping points, but modern coordinates for either are approximate.
