Mary's Well / Church of St. Gabriel

MAIR-eez WELL / church of saint GAY-bree-ul · Modern Nazareth, Israel · 32.7067° N, 35.3016° E

The Greek Orthodox counter-tradition to the Basilica of the Annunciation, this site holds that Gabriel first appeared to Mary while she was drawing water from Nazareth's ancient spring — an episode from the apocryphal 2nd-century Protoevangelium of James, not found in the canonical Luke 1:26-38 account, which names no location. The Church of St. Gabriel was built directly over the spring's source, with the water still flowing through the crypt beneath the altar. A separate public well structure in the plaza, fed by the same spring, served as Nazareth's only water source for centuries.

Archaeology

Israel Antiquities Authority excavations in 1997-98 documented rock-cut water channels dating to the Roman period (2nd-4th century CE) beneath and around the site, showing the spring was in continuous use for a very long span — plausibly including the 1st century, when Nazareth was a small village. That confirms the spring itself is ancient and was almost certainly Nazareth's communal water source in Jesus's era, but it cannot verify the Annunciation narrative detail from the apocryphal source; the present church structure dates only to a mid-18th-century (1750) Ottoman-period rebuilding after Crusader and Mamluk-destroyed predecessors.
