Mount of Beatitudes

MOWNT of bee-AT-ih-toods · Modern Mount of Beatitudes, Israel · 32.8822° N, 35.5552° E

A hill on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee, between Capernaum and Tiberias, traditionally venerated as the site where Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount, including the Beatitudes (Matthew 5-7). It has been commemorated by pilgrims for over 1,600 years.

Archaeology

Remains of a 4th-7th century Byzantine church and monastery, along with a cistern, have been found lower on the slope, confirming very early Christian veneration of the hill. The specific identification of this hill, rather than nearby alternatives, as the actual sermon location is a matter of long-standing tradition, not archaeological or textual proof. The current chapel was built in 1936-38 by architect Antonio Barluzzi.

Reflect

On this hillside Jesus called the poor in spirit, the mourners, and the meek 'blessed' — which beatitude is hardest for you to believe?
