Israel's Enslaver and Occasional Refuge
Egyptians
Also called Egyptian
The ancient civilization along the Nile whose pharaoh enslaved Israel for centuries before the Exodus — and which later, ironically, twice provided refuge for God's own chosen family, sheltering both Jacob's household and the infant Jesus.
Egypt as Israel's Enslaver
Egypt's central role in Israel's story is bound up entirely with the book of Exodus: what began as refuge, when Joseph rose to power there and welcomed his father Jacob's family during a famine (Genesis 46-47), turned generations later into brutal slavery once 'there arose a new king over Egypt, who didn't know Joseph' (Exodus 1:8-14). God's deliverance of Israel from Egyptian bondage through Moses, culminating in the ten plagues and the Passover (Exodus 5-14), becomes the Old Testament's defining act of salvation, invoked repeatedly throughout the rest of Scripture as the proof of God's power and covenant faithfulness (Deuteronomy 6:20-23; Psalm 78:12-13).
Egypt as Refuge
Egypt also repeatedly serves, ironically, as a place of refuge for God's people in crisis — Abraham fled famine to Egypt (Genesis 12:10), as did his grandson Jacob's entire household generations later (Genesis 46:1-7). Most strikingly, Matthew records that Joseph fled with Mary and the infant Jesus to Egypt to escape Herod's massacre of Bethlehem's infants, seeing in it a fulfillment of Hosea's words, 'Out of Egypt I called my son' (Matthew 2:13-15; Hosea 11:1) — the nation once defined by Israel's oppression becoming, one final time, the place where God's own greater Son found safety.
