Othniel Delivers Israel from Cushan-Rishathaim
c. 1374-1334 BC Traditional dating
Othniel, Caleb's nephew, becomes Israel's first judge, delivering the nation from eight years of oppression and setting the pattern the rest of the book will follow.
The event
With Joshua's generation gone, Israel quickly turned to worship the Baals and Asherahs of the surrounding peoples, and God allowed Cushan-Rishathaim, a king from Aram Naharaim, to oppress Israel for eight years. When the people finally cried out to the LORD, he raised up Othniel, son of Kenaz and Caleb's own nephew, as a deliverer — the same Othniel who had earlier won Caleb's daughter Achsah in marriage by capturing the town of Debir (Joshua 15:16-17).
Judges 3:10 says simply that "the Spirit of the LORD was upon him," language that will recur throughout the book to describe how God equips ordinary, often unlikely people for extraordinary tasks. Othniel led Israel to victory, and the land had rest for forty years — the first full turn of the cycle that will structure the rest of Judges: apostasy, oppression, crying out, deliverance, and rest.
Othniel's story is told briefly, almost as a template, without the personal drama that colors later judges like Gideon or Samson. That simplicity is itself instructive: deliverance comes by God's grace and Spirit-given strength, not because the deliverer is uniquely impressive on his own merits — a pattern that will hold true, in increasingly complicated ways, all the way through the book.
Dating
The book of Judges records specific year-counts for each oppression and each period of rest, but does not always specify whether these periods run consecutively nationwide or overlap regionally. Adding every judge's years end-to-end pushes well past the traditional date for Saul's reign (c. 1050 BC); most conservative harmonizations (following scholars such as Eugene Merrill and Leon Wood) treat a number of these judgeships as regional and overlapping rather than a single unbroken national sequence. The dates given for each judge in this cluster follow one standard scheme and should be read as an approximate framework rather than a settled, uncontested timeline.
