Samson and the Philistines

c. 1075-1055 BC Traditional dating

A Nazirite from birth, Samson combines astonishing Spirit-given strength with reckless personal compromise, ending his life by pulling down a Philistine temple.

The event

Samson's birth was announced by the angel of the LORD to a previously barren couple, Manoah and his wife of the tribe of Dan, with instructions that the boy be raised as a Nazirite from the womb — no wine, no contact with the dead, and no cutting of his hair — set apart to begin delivering Israel from the Philistines. From an early age, the Spirit of the LORD stirred in him, giving him feats of strength no ordinary man could match: killing a lion with his bare hands, striking down a thousand men with a donkey's jawbone, and carrying off the city gates of Gaza on his shoulders.

Yet alongside this extraordinary calling ran a pattern of reckless compromise — marrying a Philistine woman from Timnah against his parents' wishes, visiting a prostitute in Gaza, and finally falling for Delilah, who was bribed by Philistine rulers to discover the secret of his strength. After repeatedly deflecting her, Samson eventually revealed that his uncut hair was tied to his Nazirite vow, and Delilah had it shaved while he slept, breaking his consecration and leaving him helpless.

Captured, blinded, and enslaved, Samson was brought out to entertain the Philistines at a festival in the temple of Dagon. There, his hair having grown back and his strength restored through prayer, he pushed apart the temple's central pillars, killing more Philistines in his death than in all his years of life. Samson is a genuinely tragic figure — his story shows both the remarkable power available through complete consecration to God and the ruin that follows when that consecration is compromised — yet Hebrews 11:32 still lists him among the faithful, evidence that Scripture measures faith honestly rather than requiring flawlessness.
