Elisha's Ministry of Mercy

c. 852–797 BC Traditional dating

Across decades of ministry, Elisha performs a remarkable string of everyday miracles — healing water, multiplying oil, raising a child from death — marked by quiet mercy toward ordinary people.

The event

Elisha's ministry, which stretches across roughly half a century and outlives several kings of Israel, has a noticeably different flavor from Elijah's. Where Elijah's ministry is defined by dramatic public confrontations — drought, fire from heaven, a fiery ascension — Elisha's miracles tend to unfold quietly among ordinary people facing ordinary troubles, and they overwhelmingly display mercy rather than judgment.

Early on, Elisha heals Jericho's contaminated water supply by throwing salt into the spring at the town's request. He multiplies a poor widow's last jar of oil so she can pay off her debts and keep her sons out of slavery. He promises a childless Shunammite woman a son, and when that same boy later dies suddenly, Elisha stretches himself over the child's body — echoing Elijah's earlier miracle at Zarephath — and the boy revives. On another occasion, when a borrowed axe head sinks in the Jordan, Elisha simply tosses in a stick and makes the iron float.

Taken together, these episodes paint a consistent portrait: a prophet deeply attentive to the practical needs of everyday households in the middle of a spiritually and politically turbulent kingdom. Even amid a nation still saturated with the sins of Jeroboam and Ahab, God's compassion kept reaching individual families through His prophet — a quiet but steady reminder that the Lord who thunders from Carmel is the same Lord who cares about a widow's oil jar and a borrowed tool.

Dating

Elisha's independent ministry runs from Elijah's ascension (c. 852 BC) to his deathbed prophecy to Jehoash of Israel (2 Kings 13:14-20); Jehoash's reign began in 798 BC, so Elisha's death falls c. 797-795 BC. The span covers roughly fifty years and four kings — Joram, Jehu, Jehoahaz, and Jehoash. This composite entry covers a representative range of his miracles rather than pinning each to an exact year.
