Visit of the Magi and the Flight into Egypt

c. 5-4 BC Traditional dating

Wise men from the East arrive bearing gifts fit for a king, and Herod's murderous jealousy sends the holy family fleeing to Egypt for safety.

The event

Sometime after the birth, magi — court astrologers or scholars from the east, likely Babylon or Persia — arrive in Jerusalem asking for "he who has been born king of the Jews," having followed a star. Herod the Great, ever paranoid about rivals, is troubled and quietly gathers intelligence from the chief priests and scribes, who point him to Bethlehem on the strength of Micah's prophecy. The magi find the child, worship him, and present gold, frankincense, and myrrh — gifts that later Christian reflection has read as tributes to a king, a priest, and one destined to die.

Warned in a dream not to report back to Herod, the magi return home by another route. Joseph, likewise warned in a dream, takes Mary and the child and flees by night to Egypt, a natural refuge just across the border with its own large Jewish community. Herod, enraged at being outwitted, orders the killing of every boy in Bethlehem two years old and under — a horrifying but historically unsurprising act from a king Josephus records as having executed members of his own family out of paranoia.

Matthew reads both the flight and the return through the lens of prophecy, citing Hosea's "out of Egypt I called my son" as finding a deeper fulfillment in Jesus reliving, and reversing, Israel's own exodus story.

Dating

Placed shortly after the nativity and before Herod's death in 4 BC; Herod's order to kill boys "two years old and under" (Matthew 2:16) suggests the magi may have arrived when Jesus was already a young child rather than a newborn, pushing the visit itself toward 5-4 BC.
