Temptation in the Wilderness

c. AD 27 Traditional dating

Fresh from his baptism, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness to fast forty days and be tempted by the devil — and emerges victorious where Israel had failed.

The event

Immediately after his baptism, the Spirit drives Jesus into the Judean wilderness, where he fasts forty days and forty nights. At his weakest physically, the devil comes with three calculated temptations: turn stones into bread, throw himself from the Temple to force God's rescue, and bow down in exchange for the world's kingdoms. Each appeal twists a real truth about Jesus's identity and power into a shortcut around the Father's will.

Jesus answers each temptation not with a display of power but with Scripture, quoting Deuteronomy each time — the very book that recounts Israel's forty years of wilderness testing. Where Israel grumbled and failed under far gentler trials, the true and greater Israel, God's own Son, holds fast in obedience. The devil departs, and angels come to minister to him, closing the scene with a quiet reminder that obedience, not spectacle, is the pattern of Jesus's whole ministry.

Dating

Follows immediately after the baptism, c. AD 27, traditionally located in the barren wilderness west of the Jordan and Jericho.
