The Death of Joseph

c. 1805 BC Traditional dating

Joseph dies in Egypt at 110, still trusting God's promise of a future exodus, and asks that his bones be carried out of Egypt when that day finally comes.

The event

Genesis ends where the next stage of Israel's story will begin — with Joseph, near the end of a long and remarkable life, reassuring his brothers one final time after their father's death. Fearful that Joseph might now take revenge for their old betrayal, they come to him seeking mercy; Joseph, in tears, repeats the theology that has carried him through every reversal of his life: "you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today."

Joseph lives to see his great-great-grandchildren through Ephraim, and dies at 110, an age Egyptians themselves considered the ideal lifespan. But his last recorded words look forward rather than back: "God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here" — a firm statement of faith that Egypt is not the family's permanent home, and that the God who brought Abraham out of Ur and Jacob down into Egypt will one day bring their descendants back out again.

Joseph's body is embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt, and that coffin becomes a literal, physical marker of unfinished promise — carried along, centuries later, through the exodus under Moses and finally buried at Shechem once Israel possesses the land (Exodus 13:19; Joshua 24:32). Genesis closes not with a triumphant homecoming but with a family in a foreign land, holding onto a promise not yet fulfilled — precisely the position every reader of Scripture is invited to share: waiting in faith for a God who keeps his word, even when it takes centuries longer than expected.

Dating

Based on Joseph's stated lifespan of 110 years (Genesis 50:26), against a birth year of c. 1915 BC.
