Creation of the Heavens and Earth
c. 4004 BC Traditional dating
In six days, God spoke the universe, the earth, and humanity into being, crowning His work with Adam and Eve made in His own image.
The event
In the beginning, before there was a single star to name or a shoreline to trace, God simply spoke, and the universe leapt into being. Genesis opens not with an argument for God's existence but with the plain, majestic assumption of it: "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." Over six days He shaped light and darkness, sky and sea, dry land and every plant, sun, moon, and stars, and swarms of living creatures, pronouncing each stage of His work "good."
Christians who hold Genesis 1-2 as real, historical revelation still disagree amongst themselves over how old the earth and universe actually are and how the six creation days relate to that age — see Young Earth and Old Earth Creationism for the reasoning behind each view.
The crown of that week came on the sixth day, when God formed Adam from the dust of the ground and breathed into him the breath of life, then fashioned Eve from Adam's side to be his suitable helper and wife. Alone among all that God made, man and woman were formed in God's own image, given dominion over the earth, and placed in the Garden of Eden to work it and keep it. God rested on the seventh day, not because He was weary, but to set the pattern of Sabbath rest that echoes through the rest of Scripture.
Bible-believing Christians hold Creation as a real, historical event, not a borrowed myth or a poetic metaphor for an evolutionary process — Genesis presents itself as sober history, and the rest of Scripture, from the Ten Commandments' Sabbath rationale to Jesus' own references to "the beginning of creation," treats it the same way. Believers do differ, often warmly, over exactly how the six days and the genealogies that follow map onto a precise calendar date, but that debate is about timing, not about whether God truly created. On this, historic Christian confidence has never wavered: God made the heavens and the earth, and He made us for Himself.
Dating
The 4004 BC date follows Archbishop James Ussher's 17th-century chronology, built by summing the ages given in Genesis' genealogies in the Hebrew (Masoretic) text; it is a traditional reference point rather than a scientifically or textually certain figure. Note that the ancient Greek Septuagint gives larger numbers in the same genealogies, yielding a creation date near 5500 BC — the basis of the historic Eastern Orthodox reckoning, and a reading some evangelical researchers today argue preserves the original figures. Young-earth evangelicals generally hold to a Creation date in roughly this range (some thousands of years ago); old-earth evangelicals (day-age, framework, and similar views) hold that the genealogies were not intended as a tight unbroken chain and that Creation occurred far earlier. Both camps affirm Genesis 1-2 as real historical revelation about a real, purposeful act of God, and hold the dating question as a secondary matter among believers who share the same confidence in Scripture's authority.
