David's Death and Solomon's Succession

970 BC

As Adonijah moves to seize the throne, David acts quickly to have his son Solomon anointed and crowned king, then dies after forty years as king over Judah and Israel.

The event

David's last years were shadowed by exactly the kind of succession crisis Nathan had warned about. As the aging king's strength failed, his son Adonijah — next in line by age, and backed by the general Joab and the priest Abiathar — moved to crown himself king without David's knowledge. Nathan the prophet and Bathsheba acted quickly, reminding David of his earlier promise that Bathsheba's son Solomon would reign, and David, still capable of decisive action, immediately had Solomon anointed and proclaimed king at the Gihon spring, riding David's own mule in a very public procession that settled the matter before Adonijah's coup could take hold.

David's final charge to Solomon, recorded in 1 Kings 2, is both practical and deeply theological — urging him to 'walk in his ways' and keep God's statutes 'that you may prosper in all that you do,' while also settling old scores from his own reign that he hadn't been able to close out. David died shortly after, having reigned forty years in total — seven and a half in Hebron over Judah, and thirty-three in Jerusalem over all Israel — and was buried in the city that bore his name.

David's reign, ending around 970 BC, left Solomon an enormous inheritance: a united kingdom, a secured capital, vast wealth and materials David had stockpiled specifically for the temple he himself was forbidden to build, and — most of all — the covenant promise that his line would sit on Israel's throne forever.

Dating

Anchored by counting Solomon's forty-year reign (1 Kings 11:42) back from the division of the kingdom in 931/930 BC. Frequently given as 971 BC (Thiele's framework; Eugene Merrill); this timeline uses 970 BC, which pairs consistently with 966 BC for the start of temple construction in Solomon's fourth year. The one-year difference reflects accession-year versus non-accession-year reckoning. Solomon was also crowned as coregent shortly before David's death (1 Kings 1), so 'accession' and 'David's death' may be months apart.
