Dedication of Solomon's Temple
959 BC
Seven years after construction began, Solomon dedicates the finished temple with a nation-wide assembly and a lengthy prayer, and the glory of the LORD visibly fills the house.
The event
Seven years after construction began, Solomon's temple was finished, and its dedication was one of the great public worship events in all of Israel's history. Solomon assembled the elders and heads of every tribe in Jerusalem, and the priests brought the ark of the covenant up from the city of David into the new temple's inner sanctuary, beneath the outstretched wings of two massive golden cherubim. As the priests withdrew, a cloud filled the house 'so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD.'
Solomon's dedication prayer, one of the longest and most theologically rich prayers in Scripture, is worth lingering over. He acknowledged that even 'heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain' God, let alone a house built by human hands — yet asked that the LORD's eyes and name would remain there, that prayers offered toward the temple, by Israelites and even by foreigners from distant lands, would be heard from heaven. The dedication closed with fire falling from heaven to consume the offerings and a festival lasting two full weeks.
Dated to around 959 BC, this event marks the moment Israel's worship life finds its settled, permanent home — no longer a portable tent that had moved from Sinai through the wilderness and across the Jordan, but a fixed house in the city God had chosen, exactly as promised to David a generation earlier.
Dating
The temple was completed in the eighth month of Solomon's eleventh year (1 Kings 6:38), seven years after construction began — 959 BC on this timeline. The dedication took place at the Feast of Tabernacles in the seventh month (1 Kings 8:2); since that festival falls the month before the stated completion month, some chronologists place the dedication eleven months after completion, in 958 BC. Either way the date is fixed within about a year by the temple-construction anchor.
