The Clergy Sexual Abuse Crisis Reckoning

AD 2002 (Boston Globe Spotlight investigation)

Investigative reporting by the Boston Globe's Spotlight team in 2002 exposed decades of clergy sexual abuse and systematic institutional cover-up within the Catholic Archdiocese of Boston, triggering a global reckoning with abuse and institutional accountability that has continued across Catholic and Protestant denominations into the 2020s.

The event

In January 2002, the Boston Globe's investigative "Spotlight" team published the first in a lengthy series of reports documenting decades of sexual abuse of minors by Catholic priests within the Archdiocese of Boston, and, more significantly for the scale of the resulting crisis, extensive evidence that senior church officials, including Cardinal Bernard Law, had for decades systematically reassigned known abusive priests to new parishes rather than removing them from ministry or reporting them to civil authorities.

The Boston revelations triggered a cascade of further investigative reporting, civil litigation, and official inquiries across the United States and, in subsequent years, numerous other countries, revealing that the pattern of abuse and institutional cover-up documented in Boston was not an isolated local failure but reflected systemic institutional practices in many Catholic dioceses around the world, later confirmed by major independent investigations including Ireland's Ryan and Murphy Reports, Australia's Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, and Germany's and France's independent national inquiries.

The crisis produced significant institutional reform efforts, including the U.S. Catholic bishops' 2002 Dallas Charter establishing new policies for reporting abuse and removing offending clergy, along with substantial financial settlements, the bankruptcy filings of numerous dioceses, and the resignation of numerous bishops found to have mishandled abuse cases, though survivors' advocates and many independent observers have continued to argue that institutional accountability, particularly extending to the highest levels of church hierarchy, has remained inconsistent and frequently inadequate.

While the 2002 Boston revelations focused specifically on the Catholic Church, subsequent years saw parallel reckonings with clergy sexual abuse and institutional cover-up within numerous Protestant denominations and evangelical organizations as well, including widely reported investigations within the Southern Baptist Convention beginning in 2019, reflecting a broader, ongoing, cross-denominational institutional reckoning with abuse and accountability that has continued to shape global Christian institutional life through the 2020s.
