Ramesses II and Egypt's Golden Age

c. 1279-1213 BC Traditional dating

Ramesses II reigned an astonishing 66 years, built more monuments than any other pharaoh, and is the king many evangelical scholars identify — on the 'late date' Exodus view — as the pharaoh of the oppression who forced Israel to build his store-cities.

The event

Few pharaohs left a bigger footprint on Egypt than Ramesses II, who reigned for 66 years and built prolifically across the entire country: the rock-cut temples at Abu Simbel, vast additions to the temple complexes at Karnak and Luxor, and an enormous new Delta capital named Pi-Ramesses after himself. He fathered over a hundred children and outlived most of his own sons, finally passing the throne to his thirteenth son, Merneptah.

Ramesses II sits at the center of the alternative "late date" Exodus chronology, which points to Exodus 1:11's statement that enslaved Israelites built the store-cities of "Pithom and Rameses" as evidence that the oppression, and the Exodus that followed, took place during or shortly after his reign, dating the Exodus to roughly the 1260s BC rather than the traditional 1446 BC. Evangelical scholars on both sides of this question hold to Scripture's full historicity and inspiration; the debate concerns how best to correlate a genuinely complex Egyptian chronology with the biblical data, not whether the Exodus happened.

This app follows the early-date view as its default, understanding "Rameses" in Exodus 1:11 as a later, updated place name applied to a city that already existed under an earlier name in Moses' own day — much as an author today might say the "World Trade Center site" for an event before 1973 — but late-date readers will find that same conviction in Scripture's reliability fully represented here, just resolved on a different chronological point.

Dating

Ramesses II's dates are among the firmer anchors of New Kingdom chronology. He is the pharaoh most associated with the 'late date' Exodus view (c. 1260s BC), largely because Exodus 1:11 names 'Rameses' as one of the store-cities the Israelites built. The early-date view favored by this app instead reads that name as a later, updated place name applied retroactively; evangelicals differ on which reading best fits the evidence.
