The Indus Valley Civilization Flourishes

c. 2600–1900 BC

Along the Indus River in what is now Pakistan and northwest India, one of the ancient world's great urban civilizations reaches its height, contemporary with the age of the patriarchs.

The event

Centered on the great cities of Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, the Indus Valley Civilization built some of the most sophisticated urban centers of the ancient world — laid out on precise grids, built with standardized kiln-fired bricks, and equipped with covered drainage systems that would not be matched in most of the world for another two thousand years. Its people traded actively with Mesopotamia, and Indus seals have turned up as far away as Ur, the very city Abraham later set out from (Genesis 11:31).

Curiously, for a civilization this advanced, archaeologists have found no clear evidence of kings, palaces, or temples on the scale of Egypt or Sumer, and its distinctive script — found on thousands of small seals — remains undeciphered to this day. Uniform weights and measures across hundreds of miles suggest either a strong central authority or, just as plausibly, a broadly shared culture cooperating without one.

Genesis 10 records that Noah's descendants spread out after the flood into distinct nations, languages, and lands, building cities and civilizations of their own far from the line through which God's redemptive promises would run. The Indus Valley, never mentioned in Scripture, is nonetheless part of that same story: 'From one man he made every nation... having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place' (Acts 17:26). Its builders were image-bearers too, and their remarkable achievement is a small window into how capably humanity multiplied and filled the earth.

Dating

This range for the 'Mature Harappan' phase is well established by archaeology and radiocarbon dating, though scholars continue to refine the exact boundaries. Unlike the early Chinese dynasties, there is no literary tradition here at all — the dates rest entirely on modern excavation and radiocarbon work.
