Father of King David; Bethlehemite
Jesse
JESS-ee
A sheep farmer of Bethlehem and the father of eight sons, the youngest of whom, David, was secretly anointed king of Israel by the prophet Samuel — making Jesse's household the origin point of Israel's royal dynasty and, centuries later, a symbol invoked by Isaiah for a promised future ruler.
Life and work
Jesse is introduced as an elderly, respected man of Bethlehem, son of Obed and grandson of Boaz and Ruth (Ruth 4:17,22; 1 Samuel 17:12). He had eight sons, the youngest of whom was David, who tended his father's sheep (1 Samuel 16:10-11; 1 Samuel 17:12-14).
After God rejected Saul as king, He sent the prophet Samuel to Bethlehem to anoint one of Jesse's sons in his place. Jesse presented seven of his sons before Samuel, but the Lord had chosen none of them; Samuel asked if there were any more, and Jesse sent for David, the youngest, who was out keeping the sheep. Samuel anointed David there in front of his brothers, and the Spirit of the Lord came upon him from that day forward (1 Samuel 16:1-13).
Jesse's household later provisioned Saul's army during the standoff with the Philistines, sending David to bring food to his brothers at the battle lines — the visit during which David volunteered to fight Goliath (1 Samuel 17:12-23). When David later fled from Saul, he arranged for his father and mother to take refuge with the king of Moab for safekeeping, given his family's Moabite ancestry through Ruth (1 Samuel 22:3-4). The prophet Isaiah later used Jesse's name to describe a future ideal ruler emerging from David's fallen dynasty: 'A shoot shall come forth from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit' (Isaiah 11:1) — a prophecy Christian tradition reads as pointing to Jesus, while its immediate context concerns the restoration of righteous Davidic kingship.
