Elder wife of Jacob; mother of six of his sons and a daughter
Leah
LEE-uh
Jacob's first, unloved wife, given to him through her father Laban's deception, whose fertility — in contrast to her sister Rachel's — made her the mother of six of Jacob's twelve sons, including Levi and Judah, the ancestors of Israel's priesthood and royal line.
Life and work
Leah was Laban's elder daughter, described in contrast to her sister Rachel as having 'weak' or 'delicate' eyes (translations vary), a detail generally read as marking her as less conventionally attractive (Genesis 29:16-17). Laban substituted her for Rachel on Jacob's wedding night, a deception exposed only the following morning, after which Jacob reluctantly kept her as his first wife while working a further seven years to also marry Rachel (Genesis 29:21-30).
Aware she was unloved, Leah found meaning in bearing children: she gave Jacob his first four sons — Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah — naming each in ways that expressed her hope of winning Jacob's affection, most explicitly with Levi ('this time my husband will become attached to me') (Genesis 29:31-35). When her fertility paused, she gave her servant Zilpah to Jacob as a surrogate, adding Gad and Asher to the family, then bore two more sons herself, Issachar and Zebulun, and a daughter, Dinah (Genesis 30:9-21).
Leah is shown negotiating for Jacob's attention using mandrakes traded with Rachel (Genesis 30:14-16), and later stood with Rachel in solidarity when the family fled from their father Laban (Genesis 31:14-16). She died before Jacob and was buried in the family tomb, the cave of Machpelah near Hebron, alongside Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, and Rebekah — the same tomb where Jacob himself would eventually be buried, notably not alongside Rachel, who was buried separately near Bethlehem (Genesis 49:31).

Reflect
Unloved Leah named her fourth son 'praise' — what could praise look like from inside your disappointment?
