Ancestor in the genealogy of Jesus, son of Azor

Zadok

ZAY-dok

A postexilic ancestor of Jesus named only in Matthew's genealogy; a different, otherwise-unattested person from the famous high priest Zadok who served under David and anointed Solomon as king.

Life and work

This Zadok appears exactly once in Scripture, named as the son of Azor and father of Achim in Matthew's genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:14). No episode or detail about his life is recorded, and he should not be confused with the far more prominent Zadok who served as high priest under David and Solomon and anointed Solomon king at Gihon (1 Kings 1:38-39) — that Zadok lived many generations earlier and belongs to the priestly line of Eleazar and Aaron, unrelated to this genealogical figure in Joseph's ancestry.

Extra-biblical evidence

No extra-biblical source or narrative episode exists for this Zadok; he is attested only in Matthew's genealogy.
