City
Gomorrah
guh-MOR-uh · Modern Uncertain/disputed — proposed near the southeastern Dead Sea plain, possibly Numeira or a nearby site
Gomorrah is a city of the biblical world, known today as Uncertain/disputed — proposed near the southeastern Dead Sea plain, possibly Numeira or a nearby site.
What is known
- Gomorrah is consistently paired with Sodom throughout Scripture as one of the 'cities of the plain' destroyed for their wickedness (Genesis 19)
- No site has been definitively confirmed as Gomorrah; proposed early Bronze Age candidates south of the Dead Sea (such as Numeira, near Bab edh-Dhra) show real destruction-by-fire layers, but linking any specific tell to the biblical name remains speculative
- The map pin follows the southern Dead Sea theory (Numeira), matching the paired Sodom entry at nearby Bab edh-Dhra so both pins reflect a single hypothesis; under the competing northern theory — which places Sodom at Tall el-Hammam in the Jordan Valley — Gomorrah's counterpart candidates would be nearby sites such as Tall Nimrin or Tall Kafrayn
- Like Sodom, Gomorrah's destruction became a fixed prophetic and New Testament metaphor for catastrophic divine judgment on sin
- The pairing 'Sodom and Gomorrah' appears more than 20 times across the Old and New Testaments, making it one of the Bible's most repeated place-name formulas
