Apollonia

ap-uh-LOH-nee-uh · Modern Near Nea Apollonia, Thessaloniki region, Greece · 40.6237° N, 23.4697° E

Apollonia was the second waypoint Paul, Silas, and Timothy passed through between Philippi and Thessalonica (Acts 17:1), again without stopping to preach. No other New Testament passage mentions Apollonia.

Archaeology

The exact site Luke meant is not certain among scholars. Ancient itineraries place a Via Egnatia station named Apollonia between Amphipolis and Thessalonica; most modern atlases associate it with a site near modern Nea Apollonia, based mainly on itinerary distances rather than definitive inscriptional proof. No major ruins are open to visitors today, and the village's "Bema of the Apostle Paul" monument is a modern marker, not an ancient structure.
