Ecce Homo Arch

ECH-ay HOH-moh ARCH · Modern Via Dolorosa, Old City, Jerusalem, Israel · 31.7804° N, 35.2334° E

The Ecce Homo Arch is a Roman monumental archway spanning the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem's Old City, traditionally venerated as the spot where Pontius Pilate presented the scourged Jesus to the crowd with the words "Behold the man!" (John 19:5, Latin: "Ecce Homo"). Modern archaeology has established that this arch was NOT standing at the time of Jesus's trial: excavations since the late 1970s show it was built by the emperor Hadrian around 135 CE as a gateway into the eastern forum of Aelia Capitolina — nearly a century after the crucifixion — with no verified connection to Herod's Antonia Fortress or Pilate's Praetorium. The traditional identification is a later Christian devotional association, not a historically supported one.

Archaeology

The visible arch is the central span of what was originally a Hadrianic triple gateway (c. 135 CE) marking the entrance to Aelia Capitolina's eastern forum. One of the flanking arches survives inside the Basilica of the Ecce Homo, within the Convent of the Sisters of Zion (built 1857). Beneath the convent lies the Struthion Pool and a large rock-cut pavement once mistakenly associated with the biblical "Gabbatha" or Stone Pavement of John 19:13; that pavement is now also dated to Hadrian's era, not the Second Temple period. No archaeological material at the site predates the 2nd century CE, so nothing here can be physically linked to the Gospel trial narrative.
