Mount Precipice
MOWNT PRESS-ih-piss · Modern Mount Precipice, Nazareth, Israel · 32.6828° N, 35.2986° E
Mount Precipice, on Nazareth's southern edge, is traditionally identified as the site where, after Jesus preached in the synagogue and declared himself the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy, an enraged crowd tried to hurl him off the cliff, only for him to pass through them unharmed (Luke 4:16-30).
Archaeology
The identification of this cliff with the Luke 4:29 event is a longstanding pilgrim tradition rather than one fixed by archaeological proof, and some scholars note the site sits roughly 2 km from ancient Nazareth's town center. Separately, on the same mountain, the Qafzeh Cave has yielded anatomically modern human remains roughly 90,000-120,000 years old — an important find unrelated to the New Testament tradition.
