Mount Sinai

SY-nye · Modern Jebel Musa (St. Catherine), South Sinai, Egypt · 28.5391° N, 33.9752° E

Traditionally identified since the Byzantine era as the mountain where Moses received the Ten Commandments and the Law (Exodus 19-31). The identification of Jebel Musa as the biblical Mount Sinai/Horeb is a matter of ancient Christian tradition dating to at least the 4th century AD, not certain historical proof — several other peaks have also been proposed by scholars.

Archaeology

At the summit, excavations in 1998, 1999, and 2008 uncovered the foundations of a Justinianic basilica dated to roughly AD 560–565 beneath a later chapel. At the mountain's foot, Saint Catherine's Monastery — founded in the 6th century under Emperor Justinian and still in continuous use — preserves its original Byzantine basilica and fortification walls largely intact, making it one of the oldest functioning Christian monasteries in the world.
