Elijah and the Widow of Zarephath

c. 857 BC Traditional dating

Sent to a widow's home in Baal's own homeland of Sidon, Elijah multiplies her flour and oil and then raises her dead son back to life.

The event

When the brook Cherith finally dries up, God sends Elijah somewhere no one would expect a prophet of Israel to find refuge: Zarephath, a town near Sidon — Jezebel's own home territory, deep in Baal country. There he meets a widow gathering the last sticks she owns to cook one final meal for herself and her son before, as she puts it, they die. Elijah asks her to feed him first, promising that her jar of flour and jug of oil will not run out until the drought ends, and she obeys in what is one of Scripture's quiet, remarkable pictures of faith from an unlikely, foreign source.

The provision holds exactly as promised, day after day, but the story does not end with mere physical survival. The widow's son later grows deathly ill and dies, and Elijah, in evident anguish, stretches himself over the boy three times and cries out to the Lord — and the boy's life returns. It is the first recorded resurrection in Scripture, a small but staggering preview of the greater resurrection power that will one day be revealed fully in Christ.

Jesus Himself points back to this very episode in His sermon at Nazareth, noting that there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, yet Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath in the land of Sidon — a reminder, even then, that God's mercy was never confined to ethnic Israel alone, and that faith, wherever it is found, is what He honors.
