John Hyrcanus Expands the Hasmonean Kingdom (134-104 BC)

134-104 BC

Simon's son John Hyrcanus ruled Judea for three decades, exploiting Seleucid weakness to expand the Hasmonean kingdom dramatically, including the forced conversion of Idumea and the destruction of the rival Samaritan temple on Mount Gerizim.

The event

Simon's son John Hyrcanus ruled Judea as high priest and prince for three decades, from 134 to 104 BC, using a period of Seleucid weakness to expand Hasmonean territory well beyond Judea's earlier borders. He conquered Idumea, the territory of ancient Edom to the south, forcing its population to be circumcised and adopt Jewish law, and he destroyed the rival Samaritan temple on Mount Gerizim.

Both of these conquests reach far beyond ancient politics into the Gospel story itself. The forced incorporation of Idumea into Judaism means that, a century later, an Idumean family — the family of Herod the Great — would rise to rule the Jewish people, a fact many ordinary Jews never fully accepted as legitimate. And the destruction of the Gerizim temple deepened the centuries-old animosity between Jews and Samaritans plainly visible in the Gospels, from the Samaritan woman's remark about "this mountain" (John 4:20) to Samaritan villages later refusing to receive Jesus (Luke 9:52-53).

Josephus also records that this era saw John Hyrcanus's own falling-out with the Pharisees, sparked by an insulting remark at a banquet questioning his priestly legitimacy — a turning point that pushed him and his successors toward closer alliance with the Sadducees instead, deepening the party divisions already emerging in Jewish religious life.

Dating

John Hyrcanus's reign dates (134-104 BC) are well fixed by Hasmonean and Seleucid coinage and by Josephus's detailed narrative, and are not seriously disputed.
