The Buddha's Enlightenment at Bodh Gaya
c. 528 BC (traditional) Traditional dating
Buddhist tradition holds that at about age thirty-five, after years of ascetic searching, Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment beneath a fig tree at Bodh Gaya and grasped the Four Noble Truths that would define Buddhist teaching.
The event
According to Buddhist tradition, in his late twenties Siddhartha Gautama left behind his wife, son, and princely comfort—a moment Buddhist tradition calls the 'Great Renunciation'—troubled by encounters with old age, sickness, and death that his sheltered upbringing had never prepared him to face. He spent years afterward as a wandering ascetic, experimenting with extreme self-denial before concluding that neither luxury nor severe asceticism led to the answers he sought.
Tradition holds that around 528 BC, sitting beneath a fig tree at a place later called Bodh Gaya in northeastern India, Gautama attained the enlightenment (bodhi) that gave him the title 'Buddha'—the Awakened or Enlightened One. In that experience, Buddhist teaching holds, he grasped the Four Noble Truths: that existence is marked by suffering (dukkha), that suffering arises from craving and attachment, that suffering can cease, and that an Eightfold Path of right belief and conduct leads to that cessation and ultimately to nirvana, release from the cycle of rebirth.
This is a serious and, in its own terms, coherent diagnosis of the human condition—suffering is real, craving does distort the human heart, and no honest observer of the world can deny it. Where the Bible differs is not in denying the reality of suffering but in locating its root not in desire as such but in sin, humanity's rebellion against a personal, holy God (Romans 5:12), and in offering not detachment from desire but restoration through the finished work of Christ, who offers rest to the weary rather than the extinguishing of the self (Matthew 11:28–29).
Dating
The traditional date of 528 BC follows from placing the enlightenment 35 years after the Buddha's traditional birth year of 563 BC. It carries the same long-chronology / short-chronology uncertainty discussed under his birth and death dates.
