The Buddha's First Sermon at Sarnath

c. 528 BC (traditional) Traditional dating

Shortly after his enlightenment, the Buddha delivered his first sermon to five former companions in a deer park at Sarnath, an event Buddhist tradition calls 'turning the wheel of the Dharma' and the founding moment of the Buddhist monastic community.

The event

Shortly after his enlightenment, tradition holds that the Buddha traveled to a deer park at Sarnath, near the city of Varanasi in northern India, and delivered his first sermon to five ascetics who had once been his companions in self-denial. Buddhist tradition calls this event 'turning the wheel of the Dharma'—the initial public teaching of the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path that would become the foundation of the entire Buddhist tradition.

The five ascetics who heard him, tradition says, became his first disciples and the nucleus of the Sangha, the community of monks that would carry Buddhist teaching forward. From this small beginning at Sarnath—a handful of former companions gathered in a deer park—a movement grew that would eventually spread across India, and later across all of Asia, becoming one of the great world religions.

There is something worth pausing over in how small and unremarkable this founding moment appears: no crowds, no royal sponsorship, just a teacher and five listeners in a park outside a regional city. It is a reminder that consequential religious movements in history often begin exactly this way—the beginnings of the church itself, gathered in an upper room and later in homes across the Roman world, were similarly modest in the world's eyes even as they carried, in the case of the gospel, the actual power of God for salvation (1 Corinthians 1:26–27; Romans 1:16).

Dating

Traditionally dated to shortly after the enlightenment, this event carries the same long-chronology dependency as the Buddha's other traditional dates; the exact interval between enlightenment and first sermon is a matter of tradition rather than external record.
