The Earliest Upanishads Are Composed

c. 800–500 BC (dating disputed) Disputed dating

A new wave of philosophical and mystical texts, the Upanishads, turned Vedic religion inward, exploring the nature of the self (atman) and ultimate reality (Brahman) and laying the philosophical foundation for later Hindu thought.

The event

Sometime in the centuries before Israel's exile to Babylon, a new kind of religious literature began to emerge alongside the older Vedic hymns and ritual manuals. The Upanishads—their name suggesting 'sitting near' a teacher to receive hidden instruction—turned away from external sacrifice and toward interior questions: What is the true self (atman)? What is the ultimate reality underlying the universe (Brahman)? And is the self, at its deepest level, actually identical with that ultimate reality? The famous formula 'that thou art' captures the direction this literature was heading: the individual soul and the cosmic absolute are, in the end, not two things but one.

This was a genuinely significant turn in the history of religious thought. It pushed Vedic religion from a transactional system of sacrifice-for-favor toward a philosophy of liberation (moksha) from an endless cycle of rebirth (samsara), governed by a law of moral cause and effect (karma). These ideas—rebirth, karma, and the identity of self with the absolute—would become defining marks of the entire Hindu tradition and would later influence Buddhism as well, even where Buddhism rejected the idea of a permanent self.

From a Christian vantage point, there is something recognizably human in the Upanishads' hunger to get beneath ritual performance to ultimate reality itself, even as the answer they arrive at differs profoundly from the Bible's. Scripture, too, insists that reality has a single ultimate ground—but that ground is a personal, speaking Creator distinct from His creation, not an impersonal absolute that the self turns out to already be (Genesis 1:1; Isaiah 44:6). The longing the Upanishads express for liberation from futility is one Ecclesiastes voices as well, though it points the seeker toward fearing God and keeping His commandments rather than toward dissolving the self into the infinite (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

Dating

The earliest Upanishads (such as the Brihadaranyaka and Chandogya) are generally dated by scholars to sometime between 800 and 500 BC, based on their language and their position after the Brahmanas in the Vedic corpus. As with other Vedic-era texts, no fixed external chronology exists, so these dates are approximate ranges rather than firm points.
