Ancestor in the genealogy of David and Jesus; father-in-law of Aaron
Amminadab
uh-MIN-uh-dab
A descendant of Judah named in genealogical lists as the father of Nahshon, tribal leader of Judah, and, per Exodus, the father of Elisheba, who married Aaron the high priest.
Life and work
Amminadab is listed as the son of Ram (or Aram) and the father of Nahshon in the genealogy running from Judah's son Perez to David (Ruth 4:19-20; 1 Chronicles 2:10). Exodus additionally identifies him as the father of Elisheba, who married Aaron and became the mother of Israel's first priestly line, and names Nahshon as her brother — connecting Amminadab's family to both the royal line of Judah and the priestly line of Aaron (Exodus 6:23). No narrative episode involving Amminadab himself is recorded in Scripture.
Extra-biblical evidence
No extra-biblical source or narrative episode exists for Amminadab; he is attested only in biblical genealogical lists.
