Ancestor in the genealogy of Jesus, son of Abiud
Eliakim
el-EYE-uh-kim
A son of Abiud named only in Matthew's genealogy of Jesus; distinct from the more prominent Eliakims of the Old Testament, including Hezekiah's palace administrator and King Josiah's son who was renamed Jehoiakim.
Life and work
Eliakim appears exactly once in Scripture, named as the son of Abiud and father of Azor in Matthew's genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:13). No episode or detail about his life is recorded, and he should not be confused with other biblical figures who share the name Eliakim, such as King Hezekiah's palace administrator (2 Kings 18:18) or Josiah's son who was placed on the throne by Pharaoh Necho and renamed Jehoiakim (2 Kings 23:34) — both of whom lived generations earlier and are unrelated to this otherwise-unattested genealogical figure.
Extra-biblical evidence
No extra-biblical source or narrative episode exists for this Eliakim; he is attested only in Matthew's genealogy.
