Court Official of the Ethiopian Queen
The Ethiopian Eunuch
A court official in charge of the entire treasury of the Ethiopian queen (Candace), converted and baptized by Philip the Evangelist after Philip explained the 'suffering servant' passage of Isaiah he was reading on the road.
Life and work
Returning from worship in Jerusalem, this high-ranking official — described as a eunuch in charge of all the treasury of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians — was riding in his chariot reading aloud from the scroll of Isaiah, specifically the passage about a sheep led silently to slaughter (Isaiah 53:7-8). An angel directed Philip to the road, and the Spirit told him to join the chariot (Acts 8:26-29).
Philip asked if he understood what he was reading; the official admitted he needed a guide and invited Philip up into the chariot. Starting from that very passage, Philip told him the good news about Jesus. When they came to some water, the eunuch asked what could stop him from being baptized right there — and Philip baptized him on the spot. Philip was then suddenly taken away by the Spirit, and the eunuch went on his way rejoicing (Acts 8:30-39).
- Occupation
- Court official (treasurer) to the Candace, queen of Ethiopia.
- Places
- Ethiopia (the Kingdom of Kush/Meroë); encountered Philip on the road from Jerusalem to Gaza.
Extra-biblical evidence
Later church tradition (e.g., referenced by Irenaeus and Eusebius) Irenaeus, Against Heresies 3.12; Eusebius, Ecclesiastical History 2.1
Some later church writers credit this eunuch with carrying Christianity back to Ethiopia and founding the faith there.
Weight: Later tradition, not stated or confirmed in the Acts account itself, which says nothing about what he did after the encounter. Treat as pious tradition rather than history.
Scripture references

Reflect
The Ethiopian asked, 'How can I understand unless someone guides me?' — who guides you, and who are you guiding?
