Nazareth Synagogue Church
NAZ-uh-reth SIN-uh-gog CHURCH · Modern Nazareth, Israel · 32.7033° N, 35.2967° E
This small church in Nazareth's old market stands on the traditional site of the town synagogue where, according to Luke 4:16-30, Jesus read from the scroll of Isaiah, declared its fulfillment in himself, and was driven out by an angry crowd.
Archaeology
The current church building is medieval, likely built atop or incorporating a 12th-century Crusader structure. Archaeologists have found no evidence of a Roman-period public building on the site, so while the identification is an old, continuously maintained local tradition, scholars regard the specific link to the 1st-century synagogue of Jesus's day as unverified rather than established.
