Paphos

PAY-foss · Modern Kato Paphos Archaeological Park, Cyprus · 34.7582° N, 32.4061° E

Paphos was the Roman capital of Cyprus and, per Acts 13:6-12, the city where Paul and Barnabas confronted the sorcerer Elymas, who was struck temporarily blind, leading the Roman proconsul Sergius Paulus to believe.

Archaeology

Excavation since 1965 uncovered four grand Roman villas — most famously the House of Dionysos, whose 556 m² of mosaic floors depict mythological, hunting, and vintage scenes. A Latin inscription found nearby names a 1st-century proconsul some scholars link to a Sergius Paulus family, though this identification with the Sergius Paulus of Acts remains debated among historians.
