Jacob's Family Settles in Goshen
c. 1876 BC Traditional dating
Jacob and his entire household — seventy strong — travel to Egypt and settle in the fertile region of Goshen, fulfilling God's four-hundred-year-old word to Abraham.
The event
Before Jacob leaves Canaan for good, God speaks to him at Beersheba in a night vision — the same reassurance given to Abraham and Isaac before him: "Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you into a great nation... I myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you up again." This is no small comfort; leaving the promised land, even to see a beloved son again, could easily look like abandoning the promise itself. God makes clear it's the opposite — this move is part of the plan, not a detour from it.
Jacob's entire household, seventy persons in all, travels to Egypt, and Joseph rides out to meet his father in Goshen, "presenting himself" and falling on his neck weeping "a good while." Joseph settles the family in Goshen specifically, both because it's excellent grazing land and, pragmatically, because shepherds are considered "an abomination to the Egyptians" — keeping the family somewhat separate from Egyptian society, which will matter enormously generations later when a Pharaoh "who did not know Joseph" arises.
Jacob is even brought before Pharaoh himself, and in a small but striking reversal, it's the aged patriarch who blesses the most powerful man in Egypt, not the other way around. This settlement in Goshen is the moment traditional chronology marks as the start of Israel's roughly four-hundred-year sojourn in Egypt first foretold to Abraham back in Genesis 15 — the promise, given generations earlier, now visibly beginning to unfold exactly as spoken.
Dating
Jacob was 130 when he arrived in Egypt (Genesis 47:9), against a birth year of c. 2006 BC. This date also aligns with counting back 430 years from the traditional Exodus date of c. 1446 BC (Exodus 12:40-41).
