Disciple Known for Charity
Dorcas (Tabitha)
DOR-kus / tuh-BY-thuh · Also called Tabitha
A disciple in Joppa known for good works and charity — especially making clothing for widows — who died and was raised back to life by Peter.
Life and work
Tabitha (given in Greek as Dorcas, both names meaning 'gazelle') lived in Joppa and was, in Luke's words, 'full of good works and acts of charity.' When she died, the local widows gathered around her body grieving and showing off the tunics and garments 'Dorcas made while she was with them' — evidence of a life spent quietly providing for people who had little (Acts 9:36-39).
Word reached Peter, who was nearby in Lydda. He came to Joppa, sent the mourners out of the room, knelt and prayed, then said, 'Tabitha, arise' — and she opened her eyes and sat up. News of it spread through Joppa and, Luke says, many believed in the Lord because of it (Acts 9:40-42).
