Ancestor in the genealogy of David and Jesus

Hezron

HEZ-ron

A grandson of Judah named only in genealogical lists, linking the line of Perez to the ancestors of David and, in Matthew's Gospel, of Jesus.

Life and work

Hezron appears exclusively in genealogical records as a son of Perez (Judah's son by Tamar) and the father of Ram, part of the line that runs from Judah through Boaz to David (Genesis 46:12; Ruth 4:18-19; 1 Chronicles 2:5,9). No narrative episode involving Hezron is recorded anywhere in Scripture — he is known only as a name in the chain connecting Judah to David and, through Matthew's genealogy, to Jesus (Matthew 1:3).

Extra-biblical evidence

No extra-biblical source or narrative episode exists for Hezron; he is attested only in biblical genealogical lists.
