Son of the exiled king Jeconiah; father of Zerubbabel

Shealtiel

shee-AL-tee-el

A son of the exiled king Jeconiah (Jehoiachin) named in Scripture chiefly as the father of Zerubbabel, the governor who led the return from Babylon — though the biblical genealogies do not fully agree on whether the fatherhood was biological or by a levirate-style succession.

Life and work

Shealtiel is identified as the eldest son of King Jeconiah, carried into Babylonian exile after Jeconiah's surrender to Nebuchadnezzar (1 Chronicles 3:17). He is named nowhere in a narrative episode; his significance in Scripture rests entirely on being called the father of Zerubbabel, the leader who brought the exiles back to Jerusalem and began rebuilding the temple (Ezra 3:2; Haggai 1:1; Matthew 1:12). A genuine textual puzzle surrounds this fatherhood: 1 Chronicles 3:19 instead lists Zerubbabel as the son of Pedaiah, Shealtiel's brother, which scholars have explained variously as a levirate marriage (Pedaiah fathering a son credited to his deceased or heirless brother Shealtiel), a scribal variant, or simple adoption into Shealtiel's household line. Ezra, Haggai, Zechariah, and Matthew all consistently call Zerubbabel 'son of Shealtiel,' making that the line's public and legal identity regardless of the underlying biology.

Questions and debates

1 Chronicles 3:19 names Zerubbabel's father as Pedaiah (Shealtiel's brother) rather than Shealtiel himself, while Ezra, Haggai, Zechariah, and Matthew's genealogy all call Zerubbabel 'son of Shealtiel.' The most common explanations are a levirate-type arrangement preserving Shealtiel's line through his brother, or that 'son' is used in the broader ancient sense of legal heir/successor rather than strict biological parentage.

Extra-biblical evidence

No extra-biblical inscription or record names Shealtiel individually, though the Babylonian exile of Jehoiachin's household is corroborated by Babylonian ration tablets that mention Jehoiachin and his sons by name (though not Shealtiel specifically).
